Flight has a terrible reputation, with numerous reports of terrible build quality and mechanical issues like stick drift within weeks of purchase. Thus, if you're going to play Squadrons on Xbox One or PlayStation 4 and want the flight experience, this is your only choice. Flight in this, but as far as I know it's the only HOTAS set up available for consoles. It does not come with a separate throttle but has a small throttle lever built into the base. I also really like that the X3D actually numbers/labels each button, so when programming if something says Button 3 you don't sit there going, "Wait, which button is #3?" The gimbals and sensor a suitably "budget" and are not nearly as accurate or durable as the more expensive sticks, but at <$40 USD, it's absolutely the best option in the budget range. The stick itself felt nice in the hand, with a more slender profile, and might be better for those with smaller hands. The rest of the buttons felt solid so I'm not sure if it's a design or my stick just had a bum trigger. The trigger feels pretty meh, with a flimsy click that lacked good tactile feedback. Going into a roll takes far more effort than with the other sticks, so based on the ergonomics of your set up and physical strength, might be awkward or tiring. The X3D has a heavy, stable base, and it needs it because it also has the heaviest resistance to movement.
Honestly, all you've got here worth buying is the Logitech Xtreme 3D Pro flight stick. As such, prices aren't great (and are actually inflated right now due to COVID and upcoming hype for MS Flight Simulator 2020), so when I talk about value or price, please understand I mean value/price relative to that nice market. NOTE: The flight sim community is rather niche, and there aren't a lot of players in flight sim gear.
I make zero commission or have any vested interest in any of this beyond giving you a sporting chance in October when I come hunting for you in my TIE Interceptor >:) For ones I haven't used, I've added links to YouTube reviews to try and help you make your decision. I'll be breaking it down into Budget, Entry-Level, and Premium options.įor sticks I've actually used, I've annotated my thoughts.
This isn't to say you can't enjoy the game with a controller (and given the limited HOTAS options support on consoles, for many that'll be your only option), but if you're on PC and interested in upgrading your experience, this guide is for you.
>!Spoilers go here!<įrom everything shown thus far, it's pretty Star Wars: Squadrons is an honest return to the space sim style of the '90s PC LucasArts classics X-Wing and TIE Fighter, and is more complex and demanding than an arcade flight game like Rogue Squadron or Battlefront 2.Īs an "old" fart who grew up on TIE Fighter in the '90s and has been binging Elite: Dangerous in anticipation of Squadrons, I can say with certainty games like this play best with a proper flight stick or, even better, a HOTAS (hands-on throttle and stick).
